Sara Longworth creates artwork from tissue papers in a style reminiscent of the Japanese technique of “chigiri-e”, or torn paper collage. The papers used are handmade in Thailand and contain natural inclusions of mulberry, banana, mango and other plant matter. Small torn pieces of these colored tissue papers are layered to develop ‘paper paintings'. The translucent layers of color are built up to create actual and perceived textures that bring vitality and excitement into each piece. The work evolves through the process of tearing and layering, and the organic qualities of the medium shape each collage by expressing light, representing mass and evoking mood.
